Dr. Ernesto Panadero will be the new Prometric Chair in Assessment and Director of the Centre for Assessment Research, Policy and Professional Practice in Education (CARPE)

Dublin, Ireland – 19 July 2023 – The Institute of Education at Dublin City University announced today that Dr. Ernesto Panadero will be the new Prometric Chair in Assessment and Director of CARPE. CARPE was established in 2015, with support from Prometric, to enhance the practice of assessment across all levels of the educational system, from early childhood to fourth level and beyond.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Panadero as Prometric Chair and Director of CARPE,” said Stuart Udell, CEO of Prometric. “The learning and assessment industry has been drastically shifting to meet global challenges caused by the pandemic, rapid expansion of artificial intelligence, and a changing workforce. We have long relied on research from CARPE to help identify and develop solutions to best support our candidates, and we look forward to partnering with Dr. Panadero to continue this effort.”

CARPE focuses on conducting high-quality research and professional development in assessment, as well as establishing global networks and contributing to assessment policy making. Recent reports comparing outcomes from tests proctored in testing centres and online have been particularly significant in guiding decision making at Prometric since the advent of COVID-19.

“Dr. Panadero brings extensive research experience in the field of assessment and an international profile on the impact of assessment feedback on learners and learning,” said Anne Looney, Executive Dean of the Institute of Education. “This field of work is important for educators at all levels. His plans will include collaborations with colleagues from across research centres in DCU in areas such as AI and data science, as well as supporting the work of Prometric, a global leader in credentialing and licensure testing, and a significant investor and employer in Ireland’s northeast.”

“This is a critical time for education as test scores have universally declined, and students and teachers struggle to make up ground lost during the pandemic,” said Dr. Ernesto Panadero. “I am honored to accept this position and work closely with DCU, CARPE, and Prometric to research best practices and enhancements for assessments, particularly with integrating AI, to advance our field and maintain high-quality testing.”

Dr. Panadero’s research focuses on understanding how to employ educational psychology methods and theories to better understand the effects of educational assessment. He joins DCU from his previous role as Ikerbasque Research Professor at Universidad de Deusto (Bilbao, Spain) and he holds an Honorary Professorship at the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE) at Deakin University, Australia.

Dr. Panadero will succeed the inaugural Chair, Professor Michael O’Leary, who recently retired.
