IRS SPecial enrollment Examination

Individuals wishing to become an IRS Enrolled Agent must take and pass the Special Enrollment Exam (SEE).  Here are the steps involved.

Review the Candidate Information Bulletin

Before you sign up to take the SEE, please review the Enrolled Agent Special Enrollment Examination Candidate Information Bulletin. This bulletin will provide you with important information about the examination and the process for becoming an Enrolled Agent.

Register and Schedule Your Exam

The Special Enrollment Examination is a three part test.  Prior to scheduling an examination appointment you must register for each part of the examination that you wish to take. We recommend you register for all 3 parts at once if you have not already done so. Please note, there is no cost to register for the exam. First time test takers must follow these steps to establish a registration account and schedule an examination:

  • Establish a new user ID and password
  • Login to your account utilizing the new user ID and password
  • Select Internal Revenue Service
  • Select “Other Occupancy” as the business type, and
  • Confirm address information
  • Enter your PTIN
  • Complete Personal Data Page
  • Select, Schedule and Pay for an Examination

Schedule as early as possible

If you have tested before, access your existing registration account and follow the prompts to select, schedule and pay for an examination.

After registering for an examination, if you need to schedule, reschedule or cancel an appointment, you must enter your PTIN and the first four letters of your last name to access your registration information.

Prepare for your Exam

Please review the Candidate Information Bulletin for test content and scoring information, test center regulations and ID policies, registration and scheduling issues and contact information.

Take your Exam

  • Confirm the Test Center address and review directions provided.
  • Ensure that you have proper identification as required.
  • Review Test Center Procedures in the Candidate Information Bulletin. 
  • Arrive at the Test Center 30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment.
  • If you need to change your appointment please review the policies in the Candidate Information Bulletin
