In Response to COVID-19

Prometric and the NBME program are working collaboratively to address the assessment needs of the medical licensure community during the tumultuous and evolving period of response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  We understand the impact that these circumstances have on NBME test takers and constituents, and we are committed to enacting appropriate measures to preserve and maintain access to this testing program to the best of our abilities.   We appreciate the need for timely and accurate information on the status of candidate appointments and test center availability.  We are working together to address the identified needs of the NBME community. 

The following information will provide you with an understanding of the actions and responses Prometric is taking in support of the NBME programs.

Important Information and Guidance for Exam Candidates
  • Prometric has determined that the NBME programs are deemed an essential services programs under the federal CISA guidelines and is enabled for delivery.
  • Prometric is working aggressively to re-open test centers in locations where we are able to do so given local & state guidelines and restrictions.  (This list will change as government policy changes.)
  • Prometric has defined and implemented revised test center operating procedures to incorporate safety measures related to social distancing.  This includes a reduction in available seats by approximately 50% (even for essential services programs).
    • We are working aggressively to extend days and hours of operation to regain some of the seat capacity lost by these actions.
  • For those NBME candidates with appointments at centers that will re-open for testing but are on seats that need to be deactivated in compliance with the social distancing measures, you will have received a cancellation notice already from Prometric. You will need to go online and schedule a new appointment at
    • IF you looked into the scheduling system and it appeared that your original appointment was still active please be patient as Prometric is working through the backlog of cancelled appointments.  Feel free to reschedule your appointment to an open seat in markets that are available for scheduling in May, June and beyond. 
    • IF you took action to reschedule your appointment to a new date and time, please do not take any further action.  The original cancellation notice will not have recognized your new date and time but your new appointment remains intact.
      • In either scenario above, we are sending out a new appointment confirmation email that will include the exam date and exam confirmation number.
      • We will also provide you with a reminder of the new COVID-19 precautionary measures being implemented at the testing centers.
  • For those NBME candidates with appointments booked in May at test centers that are not able to resume testing, you will receive a cancellation notice from Prometric and you will be provided instructions for scheduling a new appointment online at
  • If you are having trouble booking an appointment, please check regularly as test center schedules will be fluid.  We are monitoring scheduling activity for NBME candidates in an effort to identify opportunities to better accommodate you.
  • PLEASE NOTE:  Due to the scale and impact on testing operations resulting from the global pandemic, Prometric has deployed all available resources to processing candidate transactions for those with impacted appointments.  This limits our ability to provide phone support at this time.  We will reinstitute phone support as soon as possible.
  • Additional Information:
    • Appointment cancellation & rescheduling:
      • Multi-day appointments:  Prometric is taking measures in an attempt to preserve as many NBME multi-day appointments as possible.  If your appointment cannot be saved due to social distancing you will be notified prior to your appointment.  Please expect notification within the next few days. 
      • Appointment confirmation:  you will receive an email confirming your appointment approximately 3 days prior to your appointment date.
      •  Self-service options:  Given the unanticipated number of transactions we are supporting, the best way to review your appointment details or to find current test center availability is on the Prometric website.
    • Test center operations:
      • Site operating status:  To identify if a preferred test center location is available for your appointment, we are creating a new sites open page on that will be live shortly.  Once you confirm a site is available, you can start the scheduling or rescheduling process as before.  
      • Social Distancing procedures:   A list of revised site operations procedures to ensure your safety and well-being is available on the COVID-19 page on  Please review these prior to arriving at the testing center. 

Prometric is hopeful that the Covid situation in many markets improves over the course of the next several weeks, providing more opportunities to support NBME test takers.

We will continue to review local & state guidelines to ensure centers are open and operational where permitted to do so.

We will review our social distancing requirements every few weeks and will make determinations on whether we can preserve future appointments or if they need to be cancelled due to our inability to resume testing at specific locations.

When such a decision occurs in the future, Prometric will process the cancellation and send you an appointment status notification as early as possible.  Our goal is to ensure you have current, accurate information to support your assessment needs.
