Administration of the Written Examination Is Open Year-Round
Registration
The Written Examination will be administered at various Prometric test center locations throughout California.
All Candidates (New and Returning)
To register and schedule the Written Examination, follow these steps:
- Contact Prometric:
Call 1-866-241-3118 (Option 2), Monday–Friday, 5:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. (PST).- A Candidate Care Support Specialist will create your account, provide your Prometric ID number, and assist with scheduling your examination.
- This is the only way to obtain a Prometric ID and schedule your exam.
- Prepare for Your Call:
Be ready to provide personal identification details as requested.- The Written Examination fee is $148.97, payable by debit or credit card over the phone.
- Your Prometric ID will serve as your Eligibility ID. It begins with “890” and is 9 digits long.

Written Examination Score Validity
To account for the suspension of the Written Examination in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Court Interpreters Program extended the validity of passing Written Examination scores from four (4) years to six (6) years, effective 2021.
Candidates who passed the Written Examination within six years of 2021 are eligible to take the Bilingual Interpreting Examination (BIE) in their target language when available.
Note: Candidates who have taken the BIE four (4) times without passing must retake the Written Examination to regain eligibility.
