HIMSS Certification Programs

Demonstrate your expertise and experience as a health information and technology professional with certification from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). In a field experiencing vast change, it is important to possess a standard body of knowledge and an up-to-date skillset. HIMSS certifications show your stakeholders that you are well informed and well prepared for the next step in your career pathway.

For information on the HIMSS certification programs, please visit https://www.himss.org/resources/certification, email certification@himss.org, or call +1-703-722-0580. The Candidate Handbook for each HIMSS certification program contains valuable information regarding the certification program’s scope, eligibility requirements, application process, applicable fees, exam content, exam preparatory resources, exam administration logistics, and recertification requirements.

All candidates should carefully review the Candidate Handbook (for the specific certification program which the candidate is pursuing) during the application process and before taking the certification examination.

There are now two ways to take a HIMSS certification exam. Candidates have the option to take the exam:

  1. In person at a brick-and-mortar Exam Center (with locally compliant social distancing and sanitizing protocols in place), using the Exam Center’s computer equipment and internet connection; or
  2. At the candidate’s home or office (or any location of the candidate’s choice) through a remotely-proctored internet-based testing platform, using the candidate’s own computer, webcam, microphone, and internet connection.

Your Eligibility ID# is required to schedule your exam.

How to Apply and Become Eligible for Certification

Before scheduling your exam appointment, you must apply for certification at https://marketplace.himss.org/certificationExamApplication, be deemed Eligible, and receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) notice (with your Eligibility ID#) from the HIMSS Certification Department.

Please review carefully the information contained in your ATT notice. If the details in your ATT notice differ in any way from the identification you present at your exam appointment, you will not be allowed to take the exam, will be considered a no-show (and thus will forfeit your Exam Fee), and will need to pay the Exam Retake Fee to reschedule your exam.

If any of the information on your ATT notice is incorrect or differs from the identification you will present at your exam appointment, or if the information has changed since you applied, please contact the HIMSS Certification Department immediately at certification@himss.org.

Special Accommodations

If you require any special accommodations for testing, complete and submit the Request for Special Examination Accommodations form included in the Candidate Handbook and submit the completed form to certification@himss.org after submitting your certification application.

Scheduling your Exam

  1. To schedule your exam at a brick-and-mortar Exam Center, please click here.
  2. To schedule your remotely-proctored, internet-based exam at your home, office, or other location of your choosing, using your own computer, webcam, microphone, and internet connection:

First, confirm your computer’s compatibility with the remote proctoring platform.

You must supply the computer that you will use for the certification exam. The computer must have a webcam (internal or external), microphone (internal or external), speakers (internal or external), and a stable internet connection, and you must be able to install the Prometric ProProctor™ app on your computer, prior to your exam appointment.

Click here to verify that your computer and internet network will allow testing through ProProctor, and to download and install the ProProctor app.

If you do not have application installation privileges on the computer you will be using for the certification exam, please ensure that the appropriate person with administrator privileges installs the ProProctor app on the computer, before your exam appointment.

After you have 100% passed the system readiness check and have downloaded and installed the ProProctor app, click here to schedule your remotely-proctored, internet-based exam.

If you are unable to 100% pass the system readiness check and you had attempted to check readiness through a VDI or VPN connection, please try directly from the computer rather than through the VDI or VPN; some candidates are unable to use the ProProctor™ platform through a VDI or VPN.

Also, check to ensure that your microphone and webcam are enabled (and correctly connected, if external).

If you are still unable to pass the 100% system readiness check, or if you are unable to install the ProProctor app, please click here to schedule your exam at a brick-and-mortar Exam Center, as described in option A, above.

After scheduling your exam, please review your appointment confirmation email and ensure that you have the correct exam, date, time, and (if testing at a brick-and-mortar Exam Center) testing location.

Rescheduling or Cancelling Exams

If you must reschedule or cancel your exam appointment, please do so at least 30 days or more before your originally scheduled exam appointment, to avoid a rescheduling / cancellation fee. Rescheduling / cancellation fees are as follows, within the eligibility period:

  • 30 or more calendar days before the originally scheduled exam appointment: No fee
  • 5-29 calendar days before the original exam appointment: USD 35 fee
  • Less than 5 calendar days before the original exam appointment (includes failure to appear for the scheduled exam appointment; also includes late arrival 30 minutes or more after the scheduled exam appointment time):
    • Considered a no-show
    • Exam Fee 100% forfeited
    • To take the exam, the candidate must complete the application again and pay the Exam Retake Fee. The candidate will receive an updated eligibility determination from the HIMSS Certification Department and (if deemed Eligible) a new ATT letter with new Eligibility ID#.

Rescheduled exam appointments must be within the eligibility period. If your eligibility period will expire before your exam is able to be rescheduled, you will need to re-apply and pay the Exam Extension Fee, as detailed in the Extension of Eligibility section of the Candidate Handbook.

To reschedule or cancel an exam appointment, please use one of the following links:

What to Bring to the Exam Appointment (Exam Center or Remotely-Proctored)

You will be required to present a valid, non-expired, government-issued identification with a current photograph and signature. The identification document must be in Latin characters.

If you are testing outside of your country of citizenship (at a brick-and-mortar Exam Center), you must present a valid, unexpired passport.

If you are testing within your country of citizenship (at a brick-and-mortar Exam Center) or testing through the remotely-proctored internet-based testing platform (ProProctor), you must present a valid, unexpired passport, driver’s license, non-driver’s state identification card, national identification, or military identification.

Please bring a second identification document to your examination appointment, in case there is an issue with your primary identification.

The name on your identification must be exactly the same as the name that appears on your ATT notice.

All personal items other than the identification document must be locked in a locker (at an Exam Center) and outside of the testing area, for exam security purposes.

What to Expect on Exam Day

Please reference the Candidate Handbook for a detailed listing of examination rules.

Bring a copy of your ATT notice to your exam appointment. This is required for admission to the testing area.

Report to your exam appointment (Exam Center or remotely-proctored) no later than thirty (30) minutes prior to your scheduled exam appointment. If you arrive more than 29 minutes late for your exam appointment, you will be considered a no-show, will forfeit your Exam Fee, and will need to re-apply and pay the Exam Retake Fee (and be deemed eligible and receive a new ATT notice) before rescheduling your exam.

No breaks, food, or beverages are allowed during the exam.

For remotely-proctored internet-based testing, please review the ProProctor User Guide to learn about the check-in process, security protocols, test environment requirements, prohibited items, and other exam administration procedures.

Important Exam Day Reminders

  • Review your appointment confirmation email to confirm your appointment time.
  • Arrive at your appointment (Exam Center or ProProctor) at least 30 minutes prior to your appointment time.
  • Bring a valid, non-expired, government-issued identification in Latin characters with a current photo and signature. The name on the identification must be the same as the name that appears on your ATT notice.
  • Prometric is unable to provide a completely noise-free or otherwise distractionless environment. Consider bringing your own soft ear plugs or use the Exam Center-provided head phones (if testing at an Exam Center). If testing via ProProctor, you are responsible for providing your own testing environment; it should be as distractionless as you can reasonably make it (sound, temperature, etc.). By scheduling your exam appointment via ProProctor, you assume the risk of any distractions from or interruptions to your exam administration and waive the liability of Prometric’s, HIMSS’s, and their respective contractors, agents, and representatives for any such negative impacts to your exam experience or results.
  • No breaks are allowed during the exam, and no food or beverages may be consumed during the exam. Please be prepared to take the entire exam without breaks, eating, or drinking. If testing via ProProctor, please be advised that if you depart from the camera view / testing area at any time during the exam, your exam will be terminated immediately, and your score will be based on the exam items you have completed up to that point in time.

Exam Results

Candidates will receive exam results by email within three business days after completing the exam—except beta exam candidates, who will receive results after the beta period concludes and the cut score (passing point) is set.
