Wisconsin insurance law requires resident agents applying for a major line or some limited lines to pass an examination and submit fingerprints as part of the application process. The licensing process grants permission to individuals to engage in the practice of and prohibits all others from legally practicing insurance sales. By ensuring a minimum level of competence, the licensure process protects the public. OCI is responsible for establishing the acceptable level of safe practice and for determining whether an individual meets that standard.
In December of 2015, all licensees started using the National Producer Number (NPN) as their WI license number instead of the Wisconsin-specific license number. Licensees can print a copy of the license at no cost by using the State Based Systems (SBS) website via the following link Licensees will be required to know their license number/NPN prior to printing a copy of the license. Licensees can select the following link to look up their NPN.
The Office of the Commissioner of Insurance (OCI) primary communication method relating to renewal notices, continuing education requirements and any other notice is via e-mail.
