BASIC Exam Information

Once my exam is scheduled, may I change my site location?
Due to the very short schedule for this exam, candidates are not permitted to reschedule an appointment

What information will Prometric provide?
After scheduling your exam, you will receive an appointment confirmation e-mail from Prometric. If you need to view your appointment confirmation, you may review the confirmation at

What if I am unable to take my exam?
A candidate who registers for an exam is expected to keep the exam appointment. There is a cancellation fee to cancel an exam appointment and retain the exam fee for the next registration. The candidate must submit a written request to ABA to cancel the exam appointment prior to the exam along with a check for the cancellation fee.  Both need to be received by the ABA at least one week out from the exam date.

What if my name changes before the exam?
The ABA should be notified at least two weeks prior to the exam date of any name changes so there are no issues during the check-in process.  The first and last name must match identically to the identification presented at the check-in process.

When am I expected to report to the Testing Center?
Plan to arrive at the testing center 30 minutes prior to the scheduled exam session.  If you are more than 15 minutes late for the exam, you will be excluded from taking the exam.

What are the Testing Centers like?
Prometric test centers are located in Class B office space in order to provide a noise-free testing experience.  The layout of each Prometric test  center is similar and includes a check-in area, a waiting area, work areas for the center administrators, lockers for storage of personal belongings, and a testing room housing 4 to 18 computer workstations.

What test-taking procedures can I expect?
When you arrive at the test center, you will need to present one form of identification:

  • A current (non-expired) government-issued form of identification with a recent photograph of you and your signature.  A valid driver’s license, passport, or state identification card is acceptable.

You will be asked to review a copy of the Prometric Candidate Rules. You will be asked to store your personal belongings in a locker provided. You will receive a key for the locker in which to secure your belongings. Prior to the beginning of the exam, you will go through a check-in process where your identification will be verified and the examination for which you are testing confirmed.  As part of the check-in process each person is required to demonstrate that all pockets are empty. Each person is wanded to confirm the absence of any electronic devices.  When it is time to start the exam, you will be admitted into the testing room by signing in. You will repeat this procedure every time you need to re-enter the testing room. For more information please view “What To Expect on Test Day” on the Prometric website

What type of regulations does the test center enforce?
To ensure that all candidates are tested under equally favorable conditions, the following regulations and procedures are observed at each test center:

  • Personal items, such as watches, wallets, purses, hats, bags, coats, etc., are not allowed in the testing room.  You must store all items in a locker.  The test center is not responsible for lost, stolen, or misplaced personal items.
  • Ear plugs and/or noise reduction headphones can be provided if requested.
  • One erasable note board and pen are available if requested.
  • Electronic devices, including cellular phones and hand-held computers/personal digital assistants (PDAs), and/or study guides, exam notes, textbooks, etc., are not permitted and must be left at home or in your car or secured in the locker provided.
  • The administrator will log you in to your assigned workstation, verify that you are taking the intended exam, and start the exam.  Please remain in your assigned seat.  Eating, drinking, smoking, or making noise that create a disturbance for other candidates is prohibited during the exam.
  • To ensure a high level of security throughout your testing experience, you will be monitored at all times.  Both audio and video will be recorded.
  • To request an unscheduled break during the exam, raise your hand to get the administrator’s attention. The administrator will set your testing workstation to the break mode.  In this case, the exam clock will not stop while you are away and test time will continue.
  • You must leave the testing room for any unscheduled breaks.  You will have your identification checked when you leave the testing room and again before you re-enter the testing room.
  • You are not allowed to leave the building for any reason during an unscheduled break.
  • When taking an unscheduled break, you are permitted to access personal items that you stored in the locker only if necessary - for example, if you need to take medication at a specific time.  During an unscheduled break you may NOT access cellular phones, electronic devices, exam notes, study guides, and/or any other exam related materials. Candidates observed engaging in these behaviors will be dismissed immediately from the test.
  • You may not remove copies of exam questions from the testing center and you may not share the questions or answers seen in your exam with other candidates.
  • Exam data are automatically encrypted and transmitted electronically to the ABA.
