Thomson Prometric Shares Best Testing Practices at Association of Test Publishers Conference
Baltimore, Md. – January 23, 2004 – Thomson Prometric, the global leader in technology-enabled testing and assessment services and part of The Thomson Corporation (NYSE: TOC; TSX: TOC), today announced its participation in the fifth annual Association of Test Publishers (ATP) conference. This year's event, Technology in Testing: Advancements and Best Practices, includes workshops, general sessions and informative keynote presentations, more than 70 breakout sessions, poster sessions and networking activities.
The ATP event is organized for test developers, publishers, sponsors and delivery vendors as well as users of educational, employment, organizational, psychological and certification testing, informational and educational technologists, training managers considering utilizing technology in testing programs and any professional interested in testing technology.

- Detecting and Preventing Fraud: Security Issues for Testing Programs, Monday February 2: 12:30pm – 3:00pm
Jack Killorin, Thomson Prometric vice president of Global Security, along with other industry experts will discuss methods for effective detection and prevention of theft and fraud during computer-based testing. Participants will leave the session with the ability to assess security issues, identify security risks and understand legal considerations regarding testing security.
- How to Select a Vendor for Computer-based Test Delivery, Monday February 2: 12:30pm – 3:00pm
Christopher Crowhurst, Thomson Prometric vice president of Enterprise Architecture along with four other computer-based test delivery vendors will share information about those vendors' core competencies in the areas of test development, test delivery and data management.
- Keynote Session: Titans of Testing, Tuesday February 3: 8:30am – 9:30am
Adam Kapel, Thomson Prometric vice president of Global Strategic Services and Marketing, along with other senior executives from testing organizations will present his views and insights on Technology in Testing: Advancements and Best Practices.
- CPAs and the Road to Computer-based Testing, Tuesday February 3: 11:00am – 12:00pm
David Ginsburg, Thomson Prometric director of Client Services, along with speakers from the AICPA and NASBA will discuss the CPA examination conversion from paper and pencil to computer-based format. The presentation will explore the conversion's impact on candidates, acceptance by state boards, industry needs and the importance of collaborating with all stakeholders for a successful conversion.
- Using the Internet for Secure Robust Assessments, Tuesday February 3: 2:45pm – 3:45pm
Christopher Crowhurst, Thomson Prometric vice president of Enterprise Architecture, will discuss technologies for overcoming the security, latency and bandwidth variability issues inhibiting use of the Internet for consistent delivery of content and services requiring control of refresh and navigation times. This is especially true of assessments delivered over the Internet.
- Designing Validity in Testing Systems, Tuesday February 3: 4:00pm – 5:00pm
Thomson Prometric's Brian Adams, director of Development, Dr. Paul Jones, senior scientist, and Russell Smith, psychometrician, will share an approach to overcoming the challenges involved in validating tests through the use of a holistic testing system.
- Poster Session: Multimedia-Enhanced Assessment, Tuesday February 3: 5:00pm – 6:00pm
David Meissner, Thomson Prometric executive director of Test Development, will explore the processes and procedures used to develop a multimedia exam. Attendees will have the opportunity to view a demo of cutting edge multimedia item types. Mr. Meissner will explain how these concepts and technologies can be used to improve the value of a testing program.
- eLearning Technology Assessment Standards: Update and Adoption, Wednesday February 4: 8:45am – 9:45am
Christopher Crowhurst, Thomson Prometric vice president of Enterprise Architecture, and other industry experts will provide an overview and update of the status of eLearning technology standards and their adoption as they relate to assessment.
- Maintaining Validity in Testing Systems, Wednesday February 4: 10:00am – 11:00am
Thomson Prometric's Donald Boucher, vice president of Government Business Development, and Dr. Paul Jones, senior scientist, will discuss the development, data analysis, reporting and test maintenance processes that support and maintain test validity and reliability.
- The Integrated Uses of Multimedia in Computer-based Testing, Wednesday February 4: 10:00am – 11:00am
David Meissner, Thomson Prometric executive director of Test Development, will explore the use of multimedia in the delivery of performance-based items. The integrated use of audio/video clips, simulations of "real world" activities and the implementation of external software applications will all be demonstrated.
The event's keynote speakers were selected based on their industry expertise and to share current and future trends in testing. Ralph Alvarez, chief operating officer of McDonalds Corporation, USA will cover the importance of using testing to qualify employment, verify job knowledge and assess job readiness. And Marten Roorda, chief executive officer of CITO, The Netherlands will offer attendees a European view of computer-based testing trends and its future.
